Can toughened glass be cut?

2022-09-30 09:04

We encounter glass products every day, including drinking glasses, doors and windows. Even so, many people are unfamiliar with the different types of glass and their properties. This lack of understanding can lead to problems. Here we explain why toughened glass cannot be cut.

Can toughened glass be cut?

1. Finished toughened glass must not be cut. All cutting and shaping must be completed before tempering.

2. Toughened glass, also called tempered glass, is prestressed glass. Chemical or physical methods are generally used to create compressive stress on its surface and increase its strength. External forces must first overcome this surface stress, improving the glass’s load-bearing capacity and resistance to wind pressure, temperature changes, and impact.

Glass tempering grade

1. Toughened glass: tempering degree = 2 ~ 4ncm, surface stress of glass curtain wall toughened glass ≥95mpa;.

2.Toughened glass: tempering = 2NCM, surface stress of glass curtain wall toughened glass 24Mpa ≤ α ≤69mpa.

3. Super Toughened Glass: Steel Strength & GT. 4NCM.

Why can’t toughened glass be cut?

Can U-shaped glass be cut

Unlike ordinary glass, toughened glass is heated to 600–700 degrees and then cooled rapidly and evenly. This creates uniform compressive stress at the surface, like an invisible protective layer that makes the glass much stronger. Once toughened, the glass cannot be cut.

The internal stresses in toughened glass are in equilibrium. If that balance is disturbed at one point, the entire pane can break. Its dimensions and shape must therefore be determined before tempering.

Toughened glass

1. Safety: glass is broken into small blunt angle particles like honeycomb, which will not cause serious harm to human body.

2. Bending strength: toughened glass typically has 3-5 times the bending strength of ordinary glass.

3. Deflection: 3-4 times larger than normal glass.

4. Thermal stability: the toughened glass has good thermal stability and can withstand sudden temperature changes in the range of 250-300 ° C, while the normal thickness of glass can only withstand temperature changes of 70-100 ° C.

Cut

Cutting is a physical process. In its narrow sense, it means dividing relatively soft materials, such as food or wood, with a knife or another sharp tool. More broadly, it includes separating materials with machine tools, flames, pressure, or high temperatures. In mathematics, a dividing line can separate a plane into several parts. Cutting plays an important role in manufacturing and everyday life.

Stress

When an object deforms because of external factors such as force, humidity, or temperature, internal forces develop between its parts. These forces resist the external effects and tend to return the object to its original shape. Internal force per unit area at a point on a cross-section is called stress. Stress perpendicular to the cross-section is normal stress; stress tangential to it is shear stress.
