Waterproofing principles for U-shaped glass curtain walls
Basic methods and principles of waterproofing design for U-shaped glass curtain walls
1. Fully sealed and waterproof
This simple waterproofing method is widely used in U-shaped glass curtain wall projects in China. It uses the corrosion resistance, aging resistance, tensile properties, fatigue resistance, and elasticity of sealants to close all joints and help prevent cracks throughout the building’s service life. Its reliability depends on the sealant’s performance, the frame design, and the quality of installation. The sealant should comply with the relevant provisions of the “Technical Code for Glass Curtain Wall Engineering” (JGJL02 -2003), and joint sealing must follow the specified construction procedures.
In the U-shaped glass curtain wall top and the civil structure of the main junction of the place also has a similar situation, such joint treatment is all sealed treatment. But the construction means is simple, the joints are not careful in the construction, such as civil and U-shaped glass curtain wall construction coordination, materials, interface, etc.

2. Waterproofing with open joints
Some U-shaped glass curtain-wall joints are left unsealed, allowing water to enter the open joint. The design must prevent this water from penetrating through the curtain wall. Instead, the water drains through a specially designed route or evaporates. This is known as an open-joint drainage system. This method is not used for U-shaped glass curtain walls in China.
This article examines waterproofing design methods for U-shaped glass curtain walls, along with joint construction and installation issues. Effective waterproof joints depend on material quality, structural design, and workmanship. Improving design and construction and using sealing materials correctly and consistently can greatly improve waterproofing performance.
